Training is important for shipping. Training staff on line to become trainers for a shipping company will improve the performance of the company. The STCW Convention requires that any person conducting training of seafarers which will lead to a certificate being issued is appropriately qualified. The 2010 amendments to the STCW Convention could have a significant impact on the industry. Lack of awareness of the new regulations is a bullet to get around them. Whilst the new requirements for refresher training may have caused upheaval and expense, this is an international requirement which should result in enhanced standards of essential safety skills, even for the most experienced of crew.
